How a seafood buffet works
A seafood buffet charges one price for unlimited crab legs, shrimp, fish, shellfish, sushi and sides. Like every all-you-can-eat, that price is a bet. The restaurant is betting you fill up on hush puppies, fries and chowder. You are betting on crab. But crab is also the item restaurants watch most closely, so its rules matter as much as the price.
Every dish value in this guide is a Plate Debt estimated a la carte value from the catalog inside the Plate Debt app: what one standard plate would typically cost on a regular US menu. A plate of snow crab legs means about 1 pound in the shell, and a plate of king crab means one leg section, about half a pound in the shell. No buffet charges these prices. They tell you what your plates would have cost one at a time.
What a seafood buffet costs
Here is what we could verify:
- Captain George's Seafood Restaurant (four locations in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina): $51.99 for the adult buffet and $26.99 for kids 5 to 12, with snow crab legs and steamed shrimp on the buffet every day. Soda, tea and coffee cost $3.99 (captaingeorges.com, checked October 2026).
- 100s Seafood Buffet, San Diego: $43.99 for dinner and nearly $60 on Lobster Thursday, drinks not included (Daily Meal, April 2026).
- Hollis Seafood Buffet, Spearsville, Louisiana: just under $20 on Thursdays and just under $27 on Fridays and Saturdays (The Takeout, April 2026).
- The high end: $145 a person at The Nordic in Rhode Island, per The Takeout, and $79.99 for the Seafood Gourmet Dinner at the Wynn in Las Vegas, per the Daily Meal.
The examples below use a $49.99 dinner. That is an example price, not any specific restaurant's. Prices change and vary by location, so check before you go.
Which plates carry the value
The seafood buffet has the widest value spread of any format in the Plate Debt catalog.
- Crab legs. King crab legs are the most valuable plate in the catalog at $36.00. Snow crab legs are $30.00 a plate and half a Dungeness crab is $24.00.
- Lobster tails. A 5-ounce tail is worth $26.00, and it is often rationed: Boston Lobster Feast in Florida allows one whole lobster per person at a time (Food Republic, August 2026).
- Oysters and shellfish. Six oysters on the half shell are worth $18.00, or $3.00 an oyster, with no breading or rice to fill you up. Seared scallops are $16.00 for four and steamed clams $10.50 for eight.
- Shrimp. Peel-and-eat shrimp with cocktail sauce, about 10 shrimp, is worth $13.00. Fried breaded shrimp is $9.50, because part of every piece is breading.
- Sushi. Salmon sashimi ($10.00 for three slices) beats a California roll ($8.50 for eight pieces, mostly rice). Our AYCE sushi guide goes piece by piece.
- King crab legs$36.00
- Snow crab legs$30.00
- Lobster tail$26.00
- Dungeness crab$24.00
- Oysters on the half shell$18.00
- Seared scallops$16.00
- Peel-and-eat shrimp with cocktail sauce$13.00
- Salmon sashimi$10.00
- Fried breaded shrimp$9.50
- Hush puppies$4.50
- French fries$4.00
- Dinner rolls with butter$2.50
Grey bars are the fillers. One plate of snow crab is worth twelve servings of dinner rolls.
What fills you up
The fillers sit right next to the seafood:
- Bread and fried sides: dinner rolls ($2.50), hush puppies ($4.50) and French fries ($4.00).
- Cold sides: coleslaw and corn on the cob, $3.00 each.
- Soups: a cup of New England clam chowder ($6.00) is rich and takes room a plate of oysters could use.
- Fried fish: a fried fish fillet ($8.50) is worth a little over half a grilled salmon fillet ($15.00).
- Drinks: when they cost extra, as at Captain George's and 100s Seafood Buffet, every glass raises your bill instead of paying it down.
7 plates worth $38.00 against a $49.99 bill. Still $11.99 short.
- $4.50Hush puppies
- $4French fries
- $9.50Fried breaded shrimp
- $8.50Fried fish fillet
- $2.50Dinner rolls with butter
- $6New England clam chowder
- $3Sweet tea
Seven plates and a glass of tea, and you are still $11.99 short. Same appetite, crab first:
4 plates worth $87.00 against a $49.99 bill. Paid off on plate 2, $37.01 ahead.
- $30Snow crab legs
- $36King crab legs
- $18Oysters on the half shell
- $3Coleslaw
Plates to break even
Real meals are a mix, so here is the break-even for three styles of eating. The crab and lobster plan averages king crab, snow crab, lobster tail and Dungeness crab at $29.00 a plate. The shrimp and shellfish plan averages peel-and-eat shrimp, Cajun garlic butter shrimp, boiled crawfish and steamed clams at $12.00. The filler plan averages dinner rolls, coleslaw, French fries and hush puppies at $3.50.
| Bill per person | Crab and lobster | Shrimp and shellfish | Filler |
|---|---|---|---|
| $43.99 (100s Seafood Buffet dinner, 2026) | 2 | 4 | 13 |
| $49.99 (example) | 2 | 5 | 15 |
| $51.99 (Captain George's, 2026) | 2 | 5 | 15 |
| $79.99 (Wynn seafood dinner, 2026) | 3 | 7 | 23 |
And here is how many plates of one item it would take, on its own, to cover $49.99.
| Dish | Typical plate | Value | Plates |
|---|---|---|---|
| King crab legs | 1 leg section, about 1/2 lb in shell | $36.00 | 2 |
| Snow crab legs | About 1 lb in shell | $30.00 | 2 |
| Lobster tail | 1 tail, about 5 oz | $26.00 | 2 |
| Oysters on the half shell | 6 oysters | $18.00 | 3 |
| Peel-and-eat shrimp | About 10 shrimp | $13.00 | 4 |
| Fried breaded shrimp | 8 pieces | $9.50 | 6 |
| Hush puppies | 5 pieces | $4.50 | 12 |
| Dinner rolls with butter | 2 rolls | $2.50 | 20 |
At $49.99, two plates of crab legs pay for your seat. Fifteen plates of rolls, slaw, fries and hush puppies barely get there.

Crab limits, surcharges and market price
Crab is expensive for restaurants too. The Bering Sea snow crab season was canceled two years in a row after an estimated 10 billion crabs disappeared, and the reopened quota was about a tenth of what it was three seasons earlier (CBS News, January 2025).
Crab nights
Some buffets serve crab only on certain nights. Joy Wok Super Buffet in Topeka, Kansas was reported in 2025 to serve all-you-can-eat snow crab legs on Friday and Saturday dinners (KSNT, August 2025). If crab is why you are going, call ahead.
Crab as an add-on
- Pipestem Resort State Park, West Virginia (February 2025): $29.99 for the seafood buffet, $37.98 with a half pound of crab legs, and $44.98 with a full pound (West Virginia State Parks).
- Golden Nugget Biloxi, Mississippi (April 2021): a $19.99 buffet plus $14.99 for 1.5 pounds of snow crab legs (Casino.org).
- Cape May Cafe, Walt Disney World (February 2022): crab legs became a $29.99 add-on, limited to 1 pound and brought to the table by your server (Disney Food Blog).
At Pipestem, the extra $14.99 buys about a pound, a plate worth $30.00, so the add-on nets about $15 if you finish it. The Golden Nugget deal bought about $45 of crab for $14.99. At Cape May Cafe, $29.99 for a pound is a wash.
A crab price tier
In 2021, Treasure Bay in Biloxi charged $31.99 for its dinner buffet with crab legs and $19.99 without, per Casino.org. That $12 is 40% of one plate of snow crab ($12 ÷ $30.00 = 0.4), so one plate more than covers the upgrade.
Market price
Market price means the price moves with what the restaurant pays. Hibachi Grill Buffet in Wilmington, North Carolina lists snow crab legs to go at market price, call for details (hibachibuffetwilmington.com, checked October 2026). Ask before you order.
How to eat crab legs faster
At a timed buffet, shell time is clock time. The Daily Meal reports a strictly enforced 90-minute limit at the Bacchanal Buffet in Las Vegas and a two-hour limit at The Nordic. More in our guide to AYCE rules.
The tools are a seafood cracker, kitchen shears, a pick or small fork, and a separate bowl for shells, per the crab-cracking guide from Maine Lobster Now. Then:
- One leg at a time. Twist a single leg away at the joint instead of pulling the whole cluster apart.
- Break it into sections. Bend at each joint. If one resists, use the cracker with steady pressure.
- Open the shell. On king crab, cut with shears along the softer underside. On snow crab, make small openings with shears or a cracker and peel the shell apart.
- Pull the meat in big pieces. Use the pick only for the small sections.
Crack the whole plate before you start eating, and take half plates so the crab is eaten while it is warm.
Leftover rules
Crab is where over-ordering costs the most. Sexy Crab on Long Island lets you order unlimited rounds from a paper menu but charges $15 per pound for leftovers, per the Daily Meal (April 2026), and NIKU X in Los Angeles charges extra fees for leftover seafood, per The Takeout (April 2026). That $15 for a pound of leftovers is more than a whole plate of peel-and-eat shrimp is worth ($13.00). Take half plates, finish them, and go back.
The habits that work at every all-you-can-eat are in how to beat the buffet. With group tables, everyone logs their own plates, so you can see who has paid off their seat.
